Term 1 Week 11

    ENJOY THE EASTER BREAK

Easter is a special time in our faith life. The story of Christ’s Passion, Death and Resurrection form the whole basis of why we are Christians. Unless we can acknowledge the truth in the resurrection story we struggle to find the truth is everything.

Today we had a great celebration of the secular aspects of Easter with our Easter Hat Parade, but as Christians we should celebrate the spiritual and faithful side of the tradition as well. The resurrection makes us God’s people and when we express our belief to others then we are truly living the Easter spirit. What does the resurrection mean to you?

Here is a link to our new Bishop’s easter message.

    ANNOUNCING OUR CAPTAINS

After gauging the opinions from parents about School Captains, it was clear that parents preferred our previous model for School Captains - that being 2 captains, 2 vice captains and 4 colour sports captains. It was appropriate then to revert back to our old model now that we have a substantially greater pool from which to choose without leaving only a couple of children out of the picture.

We offered the opportunity to any children who wished to put themselves forward as School and Sports Captains to prepare a short speech to introduce themselves to the school community and explain why they would make suitable representatives for the school. You can see these on our Facebook page.

All the children and staff were asked to consider who would make great representatives for the school community. We voted last Friday and after tabulating the votes we congratulate the following:

    School Captains:           GEMMA M & OJO T

    Vice Captains:              SUMMER F & MAX G

Red Sports Captains:    FREYA B & ALEX S

Blue Sports Captains:    INDIGO H & HARRISON S

All our Year 6 children need to be congratulated on how they presented themselves during their speeches and more importantly, how they have demonstrated their leadership skills throughout this term.

    STARTING & STAFFING TERM 2

After a restful and revitalising break, we will be looking forward to the start of the new term. School will resume on MONDAY 24 APRIL.

Ms McGann, Mrs Bradley, Mrs Carroll & Miss Morris are remaining on leave and we are most fortunate in keeping our current teachers with us again next term. Mrs & Mr Fren will continue in Years 3 & 4 respectively, whilst Miss O’Bree will continue in Year 1 for the next term.

As I will be on leave for the totality of Term 3, Mr Craig McNee has been appointed as Acting Principal for OLV for Term 2. Mr McNee is a semi-retired principal from the Broken Bay Diocese. He will work closely with Mrs Dunn in continuing the excellent learning opportunities for the children at OLV.

    Mr V's CAMINO

Thanks to all those that have wished me well on my Camino next term. For those that are interested you can follow the journey at:

Hopefully there will be daily updates from 17 April. Depending how strenuous the days walking was.

Stage 3 Exploring our Vision and Mission Statement

Students in Stage 3 have been exploring OLV’s new Vision and Mission Statement:

    Picture1.png

We have deconstructed the very first statement to investigate what it looks, sounds and feels like for us here at school:

In truth we love, empowering all to flourish and reach their full potential.

Check out the first part of our Vision and Mission wall! Stage 3 students created raps, bookmarks, posters and artworks to celebrate their understanding of empowering others to reach their full potential.

    EXTERNAL PROVIDERS

    Visitors.jpeg

If your child will be seeing a provider (eg; speech therapist or occupational therapist) this year at school, please complete the attached application form and return to school. If you require further information, please don't hesitate to contact the office.

    COMPASS

    compass_button.png

OLV uses the "Compass" App.  Log in details for parents/carers have been emailed to all new parents.  If you are still unable to login, or your account has been made inactive, please contact Leanne in the office to arrange a reset of your password.

    • For all new families please familiarise yourself with the information booklet you received in your information pack or enrolment pack "Parent Portal Compass User Guide" I have also attached this.

    • Only Parents/Carers have access to Compass Parent Portal.  Parents must have separate email addresses in order to both have access to compass.
    • New Users when logging into Compass are given the opportunity to update their details.  It has been noted that some parents have updated their mobile phone number by taking out the gaps within the phone number.  This is not required.  The system requires phones numbers to be in this format.
    • REMINDER: PLEASE ONLY EXPLAIN WHOLE DAY ABSENCES - PLEASE DO NOT REPORT PARTIAL ABSENCES through the Compass App.  Reporting partial absences will cause inconsistences with your child's attendance.
    • SMS's are sent to parents of students who are absent from 9.35am each weekday morning.  You will receive a text message if your child was not present during the marking the roll process.  Please logon onto compass and explain your child's absence.  Do not reply to the text as compass does not accept reply texts.
    • Please notify the office beforehand if your child is going to arrive late; you will however still receive an SMS.  The arrival time of the student will be logged as an explained absence when they present to school on their arrival.
    • On occasion you may be sent a text message even though your child is in attendance at school, this may be becuase they have arrived late and not come to the office for sign in.  If your child is late please come into the office with your child and sign them in via the compass kiosk.

    QKR APP

    qkr_pos_300X300_1_.jpeg

Part of “progress” is moving towards a cashless society – which is for discussion on another day. To assist with the banking, ordering and handling of moneys we are moving more of our payments to the Qkr system.

You will find attached instructions for QKR App.  This easy to use phone app gives you the flexibility to place orders for Canteen and fundraisers from your phone.  It also reduces the need for your child to bring cash to school.  Please remember to amend your child's year group on the QKR App to aid the timely collection of their order. We will be moving to a wider usage of this app as the term progresses.

    FINANCE NEWS

    fees.jpg

Fee Statements have been emailed out last week.

    • Any school fees that are outstanding, without an agreed payment arrangement with the Prinicpal, will be actioned per the Diocesan Fee Collection Policy.
    • For those families experiencing financial hardship it is not too late to contact the school office to arrange an appointment with the Principal or Finance Office, to discuss payment options.
    • Payments can be made via BPay, Direct Debit, or credit card over the phone or in the office.
    • Calculations have been sent home to most families.  This will help you to pay a weeklly amount to have your fees paid by the due date 30/11/23.

Any fee payers that wish to establish a new direct debit or adjust their existing direct debit, please contact Leanne in the office.

We encourage families not to pay their fees via the COMPASS App. The bank fees are significantly higher than if paid via Bpay or credit cards at the office.

    Health Care Card

Most families have already completed the attached Health Care Card Forms and returned to the school with a copy of their Health Care Card.  If you have a Health Care Card and have not handed it in please contact the office.  Health Care Cards gives up to 50% of your tuition fees.

    Go 4 Fun

        Kindergarten

Over the past few weeks Kindergarten have been learning the skill of visualisation. We worked through descriptive sentences where the children had to draw what the sentence was telling them to draw. The children really enjoyed doing this.

        Year 1

In Year 1 we have been looking at Visualising. Visualising is using words in the text to make pictures in our mind. We listened to a description of an animal with two large, curved horns, bright orange eyes and a slimy black tongue. He has an enormous poisonous wart on the end of his wet nose. He has black sharp pointed prickles down his back and claws as sharp as razors, but his teeth are blunt and brittle. His fur is soft but mattered. He has knobbly knees and turned out toes. His feet are gigantic, and he has a long bushy tail. He is also terrifyingly large. Check out how we imagined this animal!

We also read a short story about a dream dragon. We used the description to imagine what we thought the Dream Dragon would look like.

        Year 2

In year 2 we have been doing a lot of visualising. We have learnt that we can use the clues that an author gives us in the text to develop our own picture in our heads of what is happening in the story. We do this in reading groups where we focus on visualising what the character looks like or we visualise the setting where the story is taking place. We have started reading The Magic Far Away Tree and we have started our own drawings of what we visualise the tree to look like. We are adding details to our drawings when we get more descriptions from the text as we continue listening to the story. Below are some work samples of our visualisations from our reading groups and some of our beginning illustrations of the Magic Far Away Tree.
