Term 4 Week 4

IT'S GOOD TO BE BACK

One thing is for sure -- coming back to work in the OLV environment could not be more satisfying. Being away for so long (and sorry about that) one might feel a little overwhelmed to fit back in. OLV works smoothly with wonderful children who are a delight and very welcoming. It is great to be back on deck and appreciate the support for the acting executive and good will during my absence.

KINDER 2021

artwork_kinder_orientationforwebsite.jpg.thumb.1280.1280.jpg

All the energy at OLV is going into making the Kinder Orientation in a COVID atmoshere as welcoming and supportive as possible. Our Year 4 and Year 5 children have been communicating to their future buddies in a variety of ways -- manual and electronic. We will welcome 19 new students next week for their first taste of "Big School".

Whilst this is an excitng time for these new students, we need to keep the parents of these children in the picture as well. It will be a real challenge for them, especially those sending their first child to school. We welcome all our future students and families and encouage everyone to provide assistance and advice when the need arises.

SOO1

Well done John for standing up and predicting the winner of last night's match. I know there are others who might  have scoffed but a champion team will always beat a team of cocky champions. Good luck to both teams next week.

ST VINCENT de PAUL

Thanks to everyone who has supported our mini fundraisers. The children have had a lot of fun dressing up and making it fun for everyone. We have raised $223.40 so far for our Christmas Appeal. Well done everyone. :)

As we still live in the time of Covid19 and we hear what is happening around the world, we have approached the month of November.

November is the month when the Christian community throughout the world remembers it's months, and when the Christian community throughout the world remembers it's dead.  We do not need to be sad or nostalgic about those whom we have loved and lost.  Instead, remember in HOPE and in FAITH a hope and a faith which allows us to know that the death of those we love is not the end of their story or the story of our relationship with them.

May our prayers this month be dedicated to our beloved departed.

I offer my prayers for the intention of those who have died and are related to our students and their families.

Kindergarten

On Tuesday of next week we welcome the new Kinders for 2021. We have sent a welcome video home so the new Kinders can see what goes on in our classroom.

In Religion we enjoyed viewing video clips from the Bible. Our first clip was ‘Noah’s Ark’ and we learnt that God looked after Noah and his family when the flood came. We also learnt about “Joseph” who had a coat of many colours and got to create a multi coloured coat for Joseph out of coloured paper squares. We learnt that the Bible is a very special book. It is God’s book and it teaches us how to love God and other people.

In English we have been using the text ‘A Year on Our Farm” by Penny Matthews to learn about the seasons of the year and the jobs that need to be done on a sheep farm each season. In Literacy groups we take turns to build a farm, help the farmer do his jobs and play with the farm animals. We use our writing skills to write sentences about the animals and the food they produce.

We are focusing on using adjectives, conjunctions and pronouns in our writing.

Maths is challenging as we are learning about Australian notes and coins. Please talk to your children about the value of coins. Simple adding of coins will help them develop an understanding that the same amount of money can be made using different coins eg. Twenty cents is also two ten cents or four five cents.

In Visual Arts we created an artwork based on the organic shapes Henri Matisse used in his art. Matisse painted with bright and expressive colours. He developed a new art form called Cut Outs. Matisse called it painting with scissors. He created “The Sheaf” in 1953.

Kinder_Nature.jpg

Matisse used shapes from nature so we picked some leaves from our passionfruit vine and used them to make our artwork.

We celebrated Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday with lots of crazy hats. Check out our photos.

Year 1

In Religion we have been learning about the Hebrew Scriptures. We looked at who is in the stories, and a map of Israel. We made a list of some of the Old Testament stories that we were already familiar with, and over the last fortnight we have been looking at other stories such as The Tower of Babel, The Escape from Egypt and The Fall of Jericho. These Scripture passages teach us about God and about His relationship with the Hebrew people.

In English we have continued our study of persuasive texts through reading and writing. We have read 'I Wanna Iguana' by Karen Kaufman Orloff and 'Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type' by Doreen Cronin. These stories feature language and ideas that we can incorporate into our own exposition writing. We are using time connectives (firstly...secondly...finally) and strong sentence starters to structure persuasive texts, and some of the topics we have written about so far include 'The Best Pet' and 'Children Should Eat Healthy Food'.

In Maths we have been learning about Patterns and Algebra. We learnt how to make 2, 3 and 4 patterns and how we can make patterns of both odd and even numbers. We also revised our quick strategies for solving Addition and Subtraction. We used these to balance equations that have different addition sums on both sides of the equals sign, understanding that equals can also mean 'is the same as'.

In Science we have been learning about the observable features of living things. We first looked at the features we can observe in animals i.e. some are furry, some have skin or scales or feathers, others have four legs. We also looked at the features of flowers and plants. We used a magnifying glass to look closely at our flower and draw detailed, labelled pictures of the features of them. We are now looking at how we can classify animals based on their observable features. We are working in small groups to create our own zoos, where we can show which animals will live together, based on their observable features. Miss Payton is really looking forward to her tours of Year 1's zoos! Keep an eye out for some pictures! In Health we are learning about making healthy choices, and in Sport we are developing our cricket skills through playing different cricket-based games.

We have completed some watercolour paintings depicting an Australian desert scene at sunset, incorporating Visual Arts into our study of natural and human features in Geography. Our paintings look beautiful on display in our classroom!

 Year 2

In Maths, Year 2 have been revising our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies. We looked at the split strategy and the jump strategy for addition and subtraction in week 2. In week 3, we looked at using the jump strategy on a number line to solve multiplication and division questions. This week we are looking at fractions.

In Geography, we have been looking at the many ways that people are connected to places, and how different things can affect our connections to different places. We talked about the reasons that people visit other places and even went on some virtual trips of our own! We looked at the places that we are connected to in our area and the different things that can affect our journey to school. In week 3, we looked at the different ways that overseas journeys can be affected by different things like, currency, flights, transport, languages etc. We looked at different apps that might help us on these trips like Google translate! This week we are working in groups to develop a trip of our own, and demonstrate our knowledge of all of the things we have learnt about connections to places.

In Sport, we have been working on our cricket skills by playing lots of different skill-based cricket games.

In Dance, we have been learning all about composition and how we can create movement based  on a given stimulus. We looked at how we can make shapes as an element of dance and then change the levels and directions of our shapes to create movement. We are now moving on to learning choreography, and we will get the chance to add our own choreographic ideas to the sequence.

Year 3

Our Religion unit is ‘Hebrew Scriptures’. We have been reading about God’s people and the struggles they had before reaching the promised land of Canaan (Israel). We have learnt how to locate scripture references in the Bible and have read about David and Goliath in the first book of Samuel, Moses and the Burning Bush in the book of Exodus, and the Fall of Jericho in the book Joshua. We also have looked at the topography of Israel in Old Testament times.

In English Literature, we are reading the book “FernGully by Diane Young. The main character is Crystal, a fairy, who disobeys fairy lore and leaves the safety of the forest in search of the villain Hexxus. Her companion is a crazy bat named Batty, who continually warns Crystal of the danger she is getting herself into. In Writing this week, we are focusing on identifying nouns, adverbs, adverbial phrases and adjectival phrases in texts. We are trying to use these language concepts in our own writing.

In Maths, last week, we learned to do vertical addition with trading in the tens. This week, we are revising all multiplication tables, the concept of multiplying by 10, and solving multiplication of 3 numbers.

In Geography, we are learning about Australia’s neighbours. This week, we watched some short videos about New Zealand. New Zealand is made up of two main islands and many smaller islands. The Maori people were the first inhabitants of New Zealand and have lived there for over 1000 years. They call the country “the land of the long white cloud”. The topography of New Zealand is varied – for example mountains, beaches, forests, farmland, hot springs and underground caves.

In Science, our topic is ‘Living and Non-Living Things’. Over the past few weeks, we have been learning about the characteristics that something must have to be classified as living. We collected some living things that we found in the playground and did a scientific sketch of them. We also explored two specific areas in the school grounds and listed all the living and non-living things found in these areas.

Wednesdays’ Sports lessons are focusing on Indigenous games. Last week we played a game called Kalq – an Indigenous Cooperative Game involving the skills of throwing/striking/fielding. This wee we played a game called Kokan involving hitting/striking, which is very similar to hockey.

Year 4

In Religion, we are learning about the Hebrew Scriptures. We have learnt they are also known as the Old Testament. This week we looked at maps of the countries of the Bible at the time of the Hebrew Scriptures, as well as a map of Israel. We learnt about the Hebrews, some of their history and their lifestyle. We also discovered, in our reading of the scriptures, that God was often an angry and punishing God but that he wanted his people to live a good life. We compared that to our knowledge of Jesus in the Christian Scriptures and his message of “Love one Another”

In English, this term we are studying stories about the environment. We started with the picture book, “Where the Forest Meets the Sea” by Jeannie Baker. Each of us has recreated a page from the book using collage and the results are wonderful! We have used our improved writing skills to each create a story for the book, as it has very few words in it. Mrs Carroll is very impressed with our efforts, especially our work in ‘bumping up’ our writing to make it more interesting. We have also started a book called “Tears in the Jungle” written by two brothers named, Daniel and William Clarke. It tells of their amazing work to help save the Orangutans of Borneo and Sumatra. It is an inspiring story!

Our focus in Maths last week was Patterns and Algebra and we are learning about Multiplication and Division this week. We have had lots of interesting and challenging problems to solve, using our knowledge of multiplication and division facts, as well as employing our skills in inverse operations to check our work. We have been also using the Draw a Diagram strategy to assist in solving various problems at the start of each lesson.

In Science, our unit is The World’s Living Things”. We have learnt that living things have seven characteristics that identify them as ‘living’. These are movement, reproduction, sensitivity, growth, respiration, excretion and nutrition. We explored two areas of our playground and identified some living and non-living things. We had to give reasons for our decisions regarding classifying them.

In Music, we are studying a unit from Music Room, called Music All Around Us. We have had fun with a song that requires actions to accompany it. It was very tricky, but we managed to master it well. It was a fun song and we look forward to trying more challenging activities.

In Personal Development and Health, our topic is MKR – My Kitchen Rules. We are learning about the five food groups. It has been great to see that Year 4 have a wide variety of foods from all these groups in their daily diet.

We are all so excited about meeting our Kinder Buddies for 2021, next week! We are looking forward to being helpful and responsible as we assist the new Kinder students in their transition to ‘big school’.

Year 5/6

Year 5 and 6 have been focussing on writing persuasive texts, focussing on powerful word choices and strong, clear reasons. Here are 5 examples of the great work we are all doing.

  • A reason I believe that students should wear a school uniform is because it makes it easier to decide what to wear in the mornings. If you wear a uniform, you wouldn’t get judged for what you are wearing because you won’t be the only one wearing it. (Georgina)
  • I absolutely believe that all school children should wear school uniforms! School uniforms don’t take a long time to decide what to wear because it’s already there. It’s efficient and saves time. If you don’t wear school uniforms, your clothes will get dirty and eventually you won’t have a lot of things to wear. That is why you should definitely wear a school uniform! (Maria)
  • Have you felt eyes peering at you while you’re walking down the street, thinking that someone is judging your clothing as too stingy or poor? You most definitely don’t have to worry about these things when it comes to wearing a school uniform. (Olivia)
  • I am certain schools must have uniforms! Have you ever been judged or criticised for the clothes you wear? Many children are part of poor families and being bullied for something they can’t change is cruel. How would you feel? This is why I firmly believe schools should have uniforms. (Ewan)
  • I firmly agree that wearing uniforms is very uncomfortable at times. The tight fabric and harshly sewn points irritate the skin. All uniforms are tight in certain areas. Whereas if you wear your own clothes it fits you and leaves room to move around. Uniforms don’t. Wouldn’t you want to feel comfortable for the day? (El)

Year 5 are looking forward to the new buddies arriving next week. They made videos last week, which arrived in their mum and dad’s inbox throughout the week. Year 6 were wonderful mentors and videographers. They have passed on their wisdom, the tips and tricks to having a buddy and I am sure their advice will come in handy.

Miss Gallagher and I are both very impressed with the enthusiasm displayed during our Maths sessions this term with the children working on tasks to complete an assignment. For these, the students need to use their maths knowledge and skills in real life situations. If they haven’t told you about these yet, ask them.

Kindergarten Enrolment

Enrol_Now.png
We are still accepting Kindergarten enrolments.  If you are looking to enrol your child or you know a friend or neighbour, please have them contact Leanne in the office and ask for an enrolment pack.

Family Discount Forms

A purple Family Discount Form was sent home in Week 3 for parents to complete in preparation for 2021 school fees. This is an important form that we then use to calculate the fees for the coming year. It is vital that all parents complete this form and indicate if we need to apply a family discount (including siblings across both primary and high schools within the Catholic system), Health Care Card discount and the optional contribution to the Diocesan Pastoral Care program.

This form must be completed for all families including if only one child is in the Catholic Diocease.

Please ensure this form is returned to the office by Friday 20th November, 2020. This form helps our billing process for 2021. Thank you to all the families who have already returned their form.
