WE VALUE EXCELLENCE IN LEARNING

At Our Lady of Victories Primary School, Shortland, we value and promote the pursuit of excellence in a supportive and safe environment. We provide quality, positive and real education for students so they can achieve their full individual potential. Our mission is to educate children truthfully with Jesus as our focus, so they achieve their potential through a partnership of home, parish and school. We achieve our mission by ensuring teachers are well prepared and resourced,

children are happy and cared for, and parents are consulted and involved.

Strong academic and NAPLAN results arm the strength of curriculum initiatives at the school. This, combined with an ongoing dedication to co-curricular activities in the areas of performing arts, sport, leadership and community involvement, assures students are well-rounded and challenged. We aim to achieve a clear focus on student achievement, enhance student learning with technology resources, and deliver learning programs tailored to individual needs.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING SPACES, MODERN FACILITIES AND TECHNOLOGY

Our Lady of Victories provides an environment that encourages flexible learning groups in the classroom, with a strong focus on using technology. Major renovations during 2016 provided our school with new, modern learning spaces equipped to provide students with the latest opportunities. These learning spaces complement the school’s modern library and staff facilities, as well as the school hall, and provide flexibility and openness for all types of learners.

Teachers can incorporate flexible learning groups and give their students the opportunity to deeply immerse themselves in each key learning area. Children at Our Lady of Victories have access to the latest computer technology and tablets to enhance their learning inside and outside the classroom. They are given the opportunity to collaborate and express their ideas in a modern, creative and flexible medium.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

We have a small nursery growing plants for the local environment, and we nurture a few chickens. We also tend to the school vegetable garden. The children engage with the pastoral care worker to produce fresh vegetables and eggs for the canteen.

STRONG COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Our Lady of Victories is well known and respected in the community, participating in many local events and supporting charities such as St Vincent de Paul and Catholic Mission through liturgies, educational experiences and fundraising activities. As a school, we value being a part of the wider parish community of Wallsend-Shortland. A close and committed relationship is maintained between the school and the parish through active participation in the parish-based sacramental programs and the school leading a Friday parish Mass. Our school community supports the local RSL at the Anzac Day Dawn Service and conducts a service at the school, which many of the local diggers attend.

OPPORTUNITIES IN CREATIVE ARTS

Creative Arts is a curriculum area recognised as a strength at Our Lady of Victories. Students are provided with the opportunity to participate in CAPA workshops, use the music room program, participate in the school mass choir, receive private music lessons, audition for ASPIRE, learn to play the guitar or piano and enter the school talent show. We endeavour to provide an education for our students that develops their talents and capacities to reach their full potential. Students are encouraged to achieve high standards of learning and to develop self-confidence in all areas of school life. Children can also participate in weekly dance lessons to prepare for the annual Christmas carols concert and Year 6 students are taught the ukulele to perform on special occasions.
