TELL THEM FROM ME
Next Thursday we will be seeking the views to the children in Year 4-6, via an online TTFM Survey. It is important that they have say on what affects them. Parents are able to have their children OPT OUT of this activity by sending an email to admin@shortland.catholic.edu.au
ATTENDANCE
One of the legal obligations parents have, is to ensure their children attend school by the age of 6. With this obligation is the responsibility of attending on regular basis and arriving on time. Teachers are required to note late arrivals and this is recorded. Parents who regularly arrive after the bell do their children a great disservice as their child misses important learning.
Let’s look at the Maths – even if only 10mins late x 5days x 10weeks = 500 mins of lost learning time each term – that’s 2 whole days per term or 8 days over the year.
I can fully understand the odd occasion when things are hectic in the morning, but there is a growing number of children wandering into school after the assembly bells. Please ensure your child is ready for school to start the day at 8:50am. – the early bell at 8:45am is to get them organised, toileted and warmed up for the morning assembly which begins at 8:50am.
SEMESTER 1 REPORTS
On Friday 5 JULY (Week 10) the children will talk with their teachers and parents in a 3-way conversation about their progress, their success and their challenges. Booking for these chats will be available soon via compass.
SCHOOL MUSIC PRESENTATION
Things are rolling along in preparation for our musical journey through the decades. Children have been auditioning for parts and preparing dances to WOW the community. So, lock in THURSDAY 27 JUNE at 6:30pm for this wonderful extravaganza. Stay tuned for more info over the coming weeks. We are asking for a gold coin donation at the door to cover some of the costs.
Children have been asked to bring a long sleeve black T-Shirt or Skivvy to be screen printed as part of their costume. These can be cheaply purchased from Big W. Members from the ASPIRE will be coming to school to screen print them for the occasion. Please send them into school with your child’s name attached ASAP.
PUPIL FREE DAYS
A heads up for our PUPIL FREE DAYS coming up. The next day will be Friday 5 July. There will be two more days next Semester that you might like to note – Monday 16 September and Friday 22 November.
VISION AND MISSION
This week we had the Communication Team from CSO come to OLV to record what our students, staff and parents views on what our first Mission statement meant to them. The CSO team will create a video of this for all of us to view.
Over the next coming weeks the students will be looking at our second Mission statement :
In truth we Serve, acting always for the good of all.
We would like to hear from our parents about what this statement means to you. Please email Patty Dunn with your ideas patricia.dunn@mn.catholic.edu.au
ST VINCENT DE PAUL APPEAL
This term we are focusing our efforts on supporting The St Vincent de Paul Society who work hard to assist people in need and combat social injustice across Australia. Last week we launched our Vinnies Winter Appeal where we are asking for donations of unwanted clothes, blankets, towels, socks, boots etc that can be donated to homeless people who are feeling the cold as the temperature drops during our winter nights. If you have items that can be donated, please send them into school at your earliest convenience.
SLEEPOUT
On Thursday 13th June we will be hosting a Vinnies School Sleep-Out here at school to highlight the needs of the homeless and bring awareness to this growing concern in our society. Homelessness is a problem often overlooked and misunderstood in Australia. Over the past five years, there has been a 30% increase in the number of families with children being assisted by homeless services. Most of the children in homeless services are under 12 years of age. Homelessness has serious impacts on children’s education, health and wellbeing. This hands-on event develops students’ understanding of the impact of homelessness and provides an opportunity to take action.
Through ‘sleeping rough’ for one night, the Vinnies School Sleep-Out initiative hopes to raise awareness of the realities faced by members of the community with no place to call home. Students in Years 3 to 6 are able to participate.
If your child would like to be part of the experience they will need to get more information off Mrs Dunn and you will need to give them signed permission to be able to attend.
There are a number of students who have returned their permission slips but have still not paid their $10 to participate. Please do this via QKR as soon as possible.
PYJAMA DAY
Pastoral Care
Our Garden Grubs have been busy bees making compostable pots and planting winter vegetable seeds!!
VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION
In order to Volunteer at OLV you are required to complete the volunteer Induction and be cleared by the Catholic Schools Office to Volunteer.
Please follow this link https://www.mn.catholic.org.au/people/volunteer/ and complete the steps.
EXTERNAL PROVIDERS
If your child will be seeing a provider (e.g. speech therapist or occupational therapist) this year at school, please complete the attached application form and return to school. If you require further information, please don't hesitate to contact the office.
COMPASS
OLV uses the "Compass" App. Log in details for parents/carers have been emailed to all new parents. If you are still unable to login, or your account has been made inactive, please contact Leanne in the office to arrange a reset of your password.
- For all new families please familiarise yourself with the information booklet you received in your information pack or enrolment pack, "Parent Portal Compass User Guide" This is also attached
- Only Parents/Carers have access to Compass Parent Portal. Parents must have separate email addresses in order to both have access to compass
- New Users when logging into Compass are given the opportunity to update their details. It has been noted that some parents have updated their mobile phone number by taking out the gaps within the phone number. This is not required. The system requires phones numbers to be in this format
- REMINDER: PLEASE ONLY EXPLAIN WHOLE DAY ABSENCES - PLEASE DO NOT REPORT PARTIAL ABSENCES through the Compass App. Reporting partial absences will cause inconsistences with your child's attendance
- SMS's are sent to parents of students who are absent from 9.35am each weekday morning. You will receive a text message if your child was not present during the marking the roll process. Please logon onto compass and explain your child's absence. Do not reply to the text as compass does not accept reply texts
- Please notify the office beforehand if your child is going to arrive late; you will however still receive an SMS. The arrival time of the student will be logged as an explained absence when they present to school on their arrival
- On occasion you may be sent a text message even though your child is in attendance at school, this may be because they have arrived late and not come to the Office for sign in. If your child is late, please come into the Office with your child and sign them in via the compass kiosk.
QKR APP
Part of “progress” is moving towards a cashless society. To assist with the banking, ordering and handling of money, we are moving more of our payments to the Qkr system.
You will find attached instructions for the QKR App. This easy to use phone app gives you the flexibility to place orders for Canteen and fundraisers from your phone. It also reduces the need for your child to bring cash to school. Please remember to amend your child's year group on the QKR App to aid the timely collection of their order. We will be moving to a wider usage of this app as the year progresses.
- Make sure your child matches the class they are in now. You may need to go to your account settings and change their class. This will have to be completed at the beginning of every school year
- Please do not send in a paper bag as well as ordering online; this will stop any double up of ordering
- If your child is away or sick and you have ordered their lunch, you have until 8.00 am to cancel your order on QKR and receive a credit for next time
- All ordering is now closing at 8.15 am Monday morning. This allows enough time to print out the relevant reports for our volunteer ladies
- As of Term 2 all lunch orders will only be able to be ordered through QKR. Cash on the day will only be for ice blocks, lollies and chips.
We will be looking at providing this service for other quick financial transactions such as sausage sizzles, raffles, pie drives etc,
Thaks to everyone for taking up this service.
Health Care Card
Most families have already completed the attached Health Care Card Forms and returned to the school with a copy of their Health Care Card. If you have a Health Care Card and have not handed it in please contact the Office. Health Care Cards gives up to 50% off your tuition fees.
CROSS COUNTRY
We haven’t forgotten about our great Cross Country runners at our school trial last term. Presentation of ribbons to the place getters will be made at our Award Assembly next week.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
A reminder that our Athletics Carnival will be held on THURSDAY 20 JUNE at the Fearnely Dawes Athletics Centre. Racing should commence at about 9:45am. All permissions and volunteering given for our postponed event will roll over. Volunteers who are unable to make the new date, please let me know.

FACE MEETING
We had another positive meeting last Monday evening. Our F2F and online option seems to be working. Some of the discussion points included:
PB4L:Mrs Deegan presented how we are about to dive more deeply into our PB4L journey. See the presentation in the AP’s Report.
V&M Statement: Thanks was passed onto how well parents prepared themselves and those selected children for the video message being prepared. We concentrated on In truth we LOVE, empowering all to flourish and reach their full potential. We will be looking for the next cast when we finish looking closely at our second mission.
Transition to FACE: At the moment we are awaiting the final word from Bishop Michael on his decision to allow the P&F Association to be dissolved and formally take up the model of Family and Community Engagement (FACE). Once this approval is given, the P&F Back account will be closed and moved into the school administration account. Any Fund Raising and Expenses accrued for FACE activity will be have a special coding within the financial system and reports can be generated.
Canteen: Thanks to those that have been helping out with either lunches of snacks. Your service is much appreciated. If you find a spare day that you can help out, let us know so we can conduct a HOT DOG MEAL DEAL in the next couple of weeks, but we need someone to put up their hand to organise this – HOW ABOUT YOU?
How to do it: Parents would like to know how to do some of the maths strategies we teach so they can support their children in their learning. Mrs Dunn has offered to present some basic maths skills & tricks for parents at our next meeting.
Feedback: If you have something you wish to have discussed at our meetings, please drop a note intop the old P&F Mailbox in the office.
